Macau European Chamber of Commerce visit to the Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance

MACAU, November 3, 2020 – The Macau European Chamber of Commerce (MECC), dedicated to promote economic ties between Macau and Europe, recently paid a visit to Lei Wai Nong, Secretary for Economy and Finance of Macau SAR.

The objective of the visit by the MECC to the Secretary’s Office is to maintain a closer and working relationship between both Government and the Chamber.

During the meeting, MECC conveyed to the Secretary the interests and challenges amongst European businesses in Macao during the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic; flexibility for non-local unskilled labour to multi-task; polices and recommendations for diversification of Macau economy; opportunities for local entrepreneurs to start expanding their businesses to the Greater Bay Area and the role of Macau within the GBA and the future development of this vital project.

Secretary Lei wishes MECC members to take advantage of Macau’s role as the Commercial and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries and treasure the opportunities in GBA and development of Hengqin of Zhuhai. He also encouraged local entrepreneurs to develop e-commerce, an effective way for enterprises to grow their business, especially for SMEs. Besides, he affirmed that Macau is determined to diversify its economy, prioritizing in Traditional Chinese Medicine and financial services, with some new policies to be announced in this regard.
Macau government officials received the MECC included Lei Wai Nong, Secretary for Economy and Finance of Macau SAR; Ku Mei Leng, Chief of the Office of the Secretary and Chan Tze Wai, Acting Director of the Economic Services Bureau.

The visit was made by the President of the Board of Directors, Mr. Carlos Duque Simões; Executive Vice-President, Mr. Tony Un Chong San, Vice-Presidents – Mr. Carlos Álvares and Mr. Henry Brockman; Treasurer – Mr. Andrew Evans; Vice-President of the Supervisory Board – Prof. Kevin Thompson, Secretary – Mr. Filipe Santos and Secretary of the General Assembly – Mr. Rutger Verschuren.

The MECC was founded in 2013 by six European chambers of commerce in Macau, from France, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Romania and United Kingdom, with IPIM and IEEM as Honorary members and Dr. Ambrose So, Director of SJM and Ambassador Paulo Alves, Consul General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong as honorary Chairmen.
