Macau European Chamber of Commerce Presents First “Europe Day” Gala Dinner

(Macau, 23 May 2014) The Macau European Chamber of Commerce (“MECC” or the “Chamber”) today held its first Gala Dinner at Grand Lisboa, Macau as the first large-scale function after the Chamber was inaugurated last November with the presence of Mr. José Manuel Durão Barroso, President of the European Commission, aiming to promote friendly cooperation between Macau and European business communities, thereby helping diversify Macau’s economy.

Themed “Europe Day”, the dinner was attended by more than 350 distinguished guests from Macau and Hong Kong including Mr. Vincent Piket, Head of Office of the European Union (“EU”) to Hong Kong and Macao, Dr. Ambrose So, Honorary Chairman of MECC and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A., and Mr. Vitor Sereno, Honorary Chairman of MECC and Consul General of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong. Other guests joining the dinner include Consuls General of the European Countries in Hong Kong and Macau, high-profile Macau SAR Government officials and business heavyweights.

Speaking on behalf of Mr. José Manuel Durão Barroso, European Commission President, at the Gala Dinner, Mr. Vincent Piket, Head of Office of the EU to Hong Kong and Macao, said, “The tremendous turnout at the dinner tonight shows that the setup of the Chamber responded to a strong common interest and that its activities are taking shape. The EU-Macao bilateral relations are growing fast, especially in the commercial area. We are looking towards building a strong and diverse economic partnership for the long term. To do that, we will work closely with Macao SAR Government, and work together with EU businesses and business organisations.”

The extravagant night provides a perfect networking opportunity for Macau and Europe communities with the highlights of lucky draw and entertaining music performances, paired with tailored menu of refined European ingredients complementary to fine wine and champagne, ending the evening with an unforgettable European touch.
